 Nervous system quiz:

 Nervous System:

Neural system consists of specialised cells called neurons. Neurons have three major parts, i.e. cell body, dendrites and axon. Nervous system consists of three parts-central, peripheral and autonomous nervous system.

Central Nervous System (CNS)

  • It controls and coordinates all the functions of the body. It consists of brain and spinal cord.
  • Brain lies in the cranium of skull. Forebrain include cerebrum, thalamus, hypothalamus and optic lobes.
  • Cerebrum governs consciousness, storage of memory having information. It is a site of intelligence, speech, sight, smell and taste. The main thinking part of brain is forebrain.
  • Thalamus and hypothalamus deals with touch, visual system, sleep wakefulness, temperature, water balance in body, behavioural patterns of sex, sleep, stress, emotions, etc.
  • Midbrain Helps in visual and auditory analysis.
  • Hindbrain include cerebellum, medulla and pons.
  • Cerebellum controls coordination of accurate movements and balancing. It is also known as 'little brain'.
  • Medulla oblongata is connect brain to spinal cord. It control heartbeats, blood vessels, breathing, salivary secretion and mostly reflex and involuntary (uncontrolled) movements like blood pressure, salivation and vomitting
  • Spinal cord deals with impulses to and from the brain. It is the centre for reflex actions like blinking of the eyes, knee jerk reflex, etc.

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

  • It is composed of cranial and spinal nerves. There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal nerves in humans.

Autonomous Nervous System (ANS)

  • It is divided into sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system which have opposite and complimentary functions.
  • The sympathetic nervous system accelerates the body functions whereas the parasympathetic nervous system stops them.

Sense Organs

  • Sensory nerves conduct impulses from receptors to CNS. Motor nerves bring impulses from CNS to receptor organs which then respond to stimulus.

Endocrine System

  • In chordates, the neural system and endocrine system jointly coordinate and regulate the physiological functions in the body. Endocrine glands are the ductless glands.
  • Exocrine glands are glands having ducts and release enzymes, e.g. mammary glands, sweat glands, etc. Their secretion is known as hormones.

Reproductive System

  • The male reproductive system consists of a pair of testes. accessory ducts, glands and the external genitalia.
  • The female reproductive system include a pair of ovaries, Fallopian tube, uterus, cervix, vagina, and a pair of mammary glands.
  • The formation of male gametes is called spermatogenesis and the process by which female gamete is formed is called Oogenesis.
